Antonio Del Vecchio, M.D. Director of Division of Neonatology and Neonatal Surgery Neonatal Intensive Care Unit “Di Venere” Hospital, Bari, Italy
I obtained my MD degree at the School of Medicine of the University of Pisa, and I received my specialty in Paediatrics at the School of Medicine of the University of Rome (Tor Vergata) and at the Department of Pediatrics, New York Medical College, Westchester Medical Center, New York. I specialized in Neonatology at School of Medicine of the University of Siena, where I was involved in the Scientific Research Program and started my training in Neonatal Hematology.
In 1999, I was visiting scientist and participated in Neonatal Hematology Program, at the Division of Neonatology of the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, mainly involved on laboratory investigation of platelet disorders, and clinical studies on bleeding time and platelet transfusions in premature babies. During my stay in USA, I also coordinated a group of studies in Neonatal Hematology, conducted collaboratively in Italy (Brindisi, Bari, Siena and Pavia) and Florida.
From 2001 I am scientific partner of the group of Italian Society of Neonatology studying the use of red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in neonates, and Principal Investigator of the research project “Neonatal immune response and single-nucleotide polymorphisms” of the Neonatal Immunology Group of the Italian Society of Neonatology. Besides, I am p.i. and co-investigator in various italian and international research studies related to neonatal hematolgy and immunology, and I am author and co-author of numerous publications on main scientific journals of the field.
