Sophie Aronis-Vournas, MD PhD
Associated Professor
Director of Haemophilia - Haemostasis Unit

I am a graduate of the Medical School of Athens University, Greece. I received my specialty in Paediatrics, at the First department of Paediatrics of Athens University. I had my training in Haemophilia and Haemostasis at the Oxford Haemophilia Center, England, working as Senior House Officer, almost for two years. I also worked mainly on platelets and vWF at the Haematology department of the "Hospital for Sick Children" (GOS), London, for a year. In 1975, I set up the Haemophilia Center, within of the 1st depertment of Paediatrics of Athens University. The Center was recognized as an autonomous entity in 1984 and has since been the only authorized haemophilia center for children in Greece. It has expanded over the years and became also a "haemostasis and thrombosis" reference center for the paediatric population of Greece. Besides laboratory investigation of congenital and acquired haemorrhagic disorders, as well as the whole spectrum of the known thrombophilic factors (including PCR techniques), we run an outpatients clinic for haemophilia, ITP and anticoagulated patients. We provide comprehensive care to our haemophilic children, and detection of carriers and prenatal diagnosis of haemophilia with DNA techniques.

We are involved in several national and international research protocols related to haemostasis and thrombosis in neonates and children, and we have published more than 100 papers in the Greek and English literature on topics such as, haemophilia, inhibitors, prophylactic therapy, prenatal diagnosis of haemophilia, ITP, neonatal haemostasis, thrombosis in the neonate, thrombosis in childhood etc.
